How I Met Your Mother Recap – Perfect Cock-a-Mouse-Tail

Tonight’s HIMYM episode was called the “The Perfect Cocktail,” but I was most excited to see the return of the one, the only…cock-a-mouse! That episode from season one remains one of my all-time favorites, perhaps because who among us has not had a terrifying household pest situation? My roommate and I have had our share of crazy mouse and cockroach stories that haunted us for days—and we named these unwanted guests as well. But I also loved that episode because it was so early on in the show’s history, yet I felt like I knew these characters so well. While tonight’s episode will not go down as an instant-classic the way the original cock-a-mouse episode did, it gave us a lot of light fun and humor after an emotionally-draining year for our gang.

The main premise was that Marshall had finally quit his GNB job, but was getting unfairly bad recommendations from his former boss. When Zoey (remember her? ugh) encouraged Marshall to get revenge on GNB by helping her shut down the Arcadian project, it pits Marshall versus Barney (and Ted). The girls could not stand to see their group at war, so Lily and Robin try to concoct the perfect cocktail to get the guys talking to each other again. I enjoyed the very careful analysis and consideration Lily and Robin gave to each kind of alcohol. First, there is truth to their logic that people react in specific ways to specific kinds of alcohol (I agree with Teddy Westside—never drink tequila, kids…it leads to bad things). Second, it showed just how well this group knows each other (Marshall being attracted to himself when drinking daiquiris!). Third, it once again showcased the long-standing joke that Lily is quasi-attracted to Robin and would totally make out with her (with or without alcohol).

Meanwhile, Ted was still trying to make his relationship work with Zoey, despite the fact that she is trying to put a stop to his major architectural project (and despite the fact we all know it is not going to work out, thankfully). Apparently Ted and Zoey change the subject every time the Arcadian comes up…Oprah leaving anyone? Ted put Zoey’s love for the Arcadian to the test by taking her to stay there for their “romantic weekend getaway.” She made an effort to tough it out, and even opened up to Ted about how the real reason she loves the hotel is because it is where her family first stayed when they came to NYC, broke. I wasn’t even sure if we were supposed to believe this sob story—we all know how manipulative Zoey is. But Ted believed it, and just as they told one another ‘I Love You,’ the infamous cock-a-mouse made a surprise appearance! I absolutely loved Ted’s excited reaction, exclaiming it must have taken shelter at the hotel and had babies! He was seeing a long-lost ‘friend,’ and so were we. And then they ran screaming from the hotel of horrors.

By the end of the episode, Ted joined Team Zoey and Marshall regarding preserving the Arcadian. Really, Ted? You are that OK with giving up on your architecture opportunity? And, despite Lily and Robin’s best efforts, Barney was still upset at his bros deserting him over their stance on the project. Robin and Lily did have one major victory: they got their MacLaren’s booth back from the bitches who gave them the “walk-by stink-eye” and stole it. Oh, and they had another victory too: absinthe.

A few favorite cocktails from tonight:

  • Robin and Lily marking their booth territory: “Should we leave, or stay here Lionel Richie style, all night long?” … “I’ll have a mojito and you’ll have a no-seat-ho”
  • Marshall + Gin = Gets in a fight with himself (in a mirror)
  • Lily + Martinis = Makes-out with Robin
  • Anyone + Absinthe = Floating by on cloud 9
  • Marshall + Daiquiris = Attracted to himself
  • Ted + Bourbon = Really good a beat-boxing (or so he thinks)
  • Barney/Marshall + Whisky = Daddy issues
  • Brandy = Forgiveness (or Robin’s father’s mistress)
  • “Can you get STDs from the ghost of a prostitute?” (Ted feeling the ghost of prostitutes past at the slum Arcadian)
  • Lily and Robin scrubbing down their booth once they get it back

Did you think this episode was ‘the perfect cocktail”…or do you prefer the weightier episodes? Only a few to go until we see a glimpse of the wedding we first saw in the season premiere…but it will still only be a tease!

I love the lighthearted episodes. I don’t mind a heavy one every now and again, and I do like the way the show has been handling Marshall’s dad’s death, but I really enjoy watching all the silly, recurring cockamouse type scenes.
